Perhaps the best way to promote the need for higher computer literacy skills is for big name IT companies to give back to communities in need. Hispanic and black schools are at a severe disadvantage compared to the white schools when it comes to funding, teachers, and facilities. However, with the help of tech giants, underprivileged students are given the resources to enhance their computer skills as well as develop a love for it. One prime example of companies giving back is Cisco. In 1997, many schools did not have the means nor method to maintain the routers necessary for Internet accessibility. Cisco then sponsored a program in which students could learn how to maintain the routers after school and essentially became the maintenance team themselves. Not only does this teach the students how to utilize the technology, but it also promotes their love of learning.
Another example of companies implementing programs is Microsoft. After noticing a lack of students interested in computer science, Microsoft sought out to make sure that there were computer science courses offered in high schools by supplying resources and Microsoft's own employees as the instructors. For these immense companies, giving back is very simple and seen as almost a part of their responsibility as tech corporations. Not only does it improve the company's public image, but giving back to the people is a great way to educate potential future employees, thinkers, and leaders. For the children of minorities who are never given the chance to prove themselves, companies giving back provides them with that opportunity to learn and be given an equal possibility to succeed as their white counterparts.
