Marketing in Major Companies
Commercials are a great way to introduce a new product, spread an idea, or increase notoriety. Whichever companies set as their goal, the process is still the same: create an advertisement that will stick with the consumer. In today's society, the ads that stick with us are typically the ones that makes us laugh, cry, or feel any sort of strong emotion. On the road in order to stimulate the viewers, many companies tread dangerously when it comes to the jokes they choose to air. One such commercial by PepsiCo aired in 2013 for the drink Mountain Dew. The commerical depicted a goat in a police lineup consisting of all black males in stereotypical clothing. A woman was then asked to identify her attacker; sending the message that only black males would be suspected of assault. PepsiCo most likely never intended for anyone to be offended, but intent is not necessary for discrimination.
If racist messages and stereotypes are displayed on live television or on YouTube, then it continues current stereotypes and hinders any progressive towards equality. These major companies have a large influence on people's interpretation of the world and by sending such messages in the hope of being funny only sets us back. The things that we find funny should not be inherently racist because that means we are acknowledging the existence of these stereotypes and accepting them as truth.
